Directions & Parking
34500 Puerto Place, Dana Point, CA
FROM THE NORTH
Take I-5 South to the Pacific Coast Hwy/Camino Las Ramblas exit just past San Juan Capistrano (approximately 15 miles south of the 405/5 interchange). After exiting, bear right at the fork and merge onto Pacific Coast Hwy North. Drive 1 mile and turn left onto Dana Point Harbor Drive (just past the pedestrian bridge).
FROM THE SOUTH
Take I-5 North to the Beach Cities/Camino Las Ramblas off-ramp, which veers left back under the freeway and then merges onto Pacific Coast Hwy. Drive 1 mile and turn left on Dana Point Harbor Drive (just past the pedestrian bridge).
PADDLERS
Due to the ongoing renovations of the Dana Point Harbor, parking availability and requirements have been in flux. There are several options available for parking, including lots with metered parking, street parking along Park Lantern Road and the south bound side of Dana Point Harbor Drive which continues to Del Obispo. Please be aware of posted signage. There is also a metered lot at the westerly end of Puerto Place (this a different lot from the one being used for canoe trailer parking).
Parking at the launch ramp is limited. Too many unnecessary impacts may deny us use of the launch ramp in future years.
Canoes & Trailers
NO PUBLIC PARKING FOR PASSENGER CARS AT THIS LOCATION.
Canoes
Continue past Doheny State Park and turn left at the next signal, Puerto Place. The parking lot for trailer parking and canoe rigging, 34500 Puerto Place, Dana Point, is a short distance on your left and is the only left turn that can be made from Puerto Place.
This parking lot opens at 6am.
Trailers
Trailer parking is FREE.
Trailers must be removed from the parking lot by 6pm.
The Puerto Place lot will not be open for trailer parking on Friday.
- There will be space adjacent to your canoe trailer parking to rig your canoes
- Due to limited space, the opportunity to depart with your truck/trailer early might be difficult.
Friday Night Trailer & Tow Vehicle Parking
Friday night fee trailer parking, at the Embarcadero public launch ramp fee parking area.
ABSOLUTELY NO vehicle parking without a trailer attached in the Embarcadero launch ramp lot.
You are required to move into Puerto Place lot Saturday morning by 6am.
No rigging is allowed in the launch ramp parking lot.
Rigging & Launching
Rigging
Rigging and all race-related activities (registration, steerspersons’ meeting, awards, raffle, and lunch sales) will take place this year in the Puerto Place parking lot. For rigging, bring cradles/padding to protect your canoe hulls and amas. The surface is concrete and asphalt. Canoes must be staged here until permission to launch is announced.
Launching
When released to launch by SCORA officials, paddlers will carry or dolly-wheel canoes across Puerto Place Street, through a back gate at the Embarcadero and down to the launch ramp. Please coordinate with your escort boat driver prior to moving to the launch ramp to minimize delays at the ramp. Crew exchange between races will also occur at the launch ramp.
After the men’s race, crews will paddle their canoes back to the launch ramp and transport the canoes back to the Puerto Place lot. Please be courteous and expeditious at the launch ramp when making your changes and transporting canoes.
PLEASE NOTE: No launching or landing of canoes at Doheny State Beach!

Race Registration
Complete all registration online before midnight on Friday, August 9. A late fee per crew applies to race-day registration. Check-in closes at 8am. Even if you only have a men’s team racing in the afternoon, you still must check in and pay your race fees in the morning before 8am. If you don’t pay your race fees before 8am, a late fee will be applied.
Escort Boats
We will attempt to secure escort boats for outlying clubs that wish to compete in our race. The deadline for escort boats is July 31. All escort boat requests should be sent to allenschade@cox.net. Outlying clubs will be given priority. Newport Beach clubs will be required to obtain their own escort boats.
Escort boat fee is $700 for the day. If you wish to share an escort boat, it is up to the primary club to pay in full the escort boat driver and to collect payment from the secondary club. DOCC will ensure each escort boat has the proper insurance paperwork before submitting any names to requesting clubs.
After receiving contact information for your escort boat, it is recommended that you contact them as soon as possible. Exchange contact information and arrange to meet up at the launch ramp on race day. Each club will be responsible for communicating with their assigned escort boat/captains prior to race day. Additionally, each club will be responsible for payments and race arrangements with their associated captains. If you fail to make payment to your escort boat operator, your escort boat privilege will be denied the following year.
Dana Point launch ramp is public. DOCC has no authorization to regulate who enters and uses the facility. Please allow adequate time for unexpected delays for both your canoe club and escort boat driver.
Please note that ALL escort boats (even the ones you supply yourself) must sign a SCORA escort/safety boat waiver and release and must supply the required proof of insurance with a minimum of $300,000 per occurrence. The waiver can be found at 2024 Escort Boat Skipper Waiver
Please have all crews watch SCORA’s video on escort boat best practices at Click Here
Please respect your escort boat owner’s requests and always let common courtesy prevail. They are doing us all a great favor and without them, 9-man Season would not be possible.
